Super Sexy Sugar Cleanse + Raw Food: Day 5

kimberly February 26th, 2010

The good news is that I am on my fifth day without coffee and I am still standing. Well, sitting at the moment, but you know what I mean. In fact, all this raw food combined with a lack of sugar is making for a pretty energized me.

The bad news is that I am on my fifth day without coffee and I miss it so much and how am I supposed to make it till Monday without a steamy 20-ounce mug of caffeinated deliciousness? By Tuesday afternoon I was feeling headachey, cranky and desperate, but resisted the urge to brew a pot. I find it especially difficult to work without coffee, since it seems to go hand in hand with slaving away over Illustrator files (a holdover, I think, from when I worked at a design agency and could easily drink three pots a day). However, I refuse to give in and I will make it through the weekend.

I’m still drinking smoothies, since they last forever and keep me feeling fairly full. Of course, Adam and Leah also love the smoothies (Adam gets his own each morning and Leah usually shares a few sips) so they’re usually lurking around waiting for me to leave mine unattended. I do find it slightly ironic that I’m using a Starbucks cup for the smoothies, but it’s double-walled and prevents condensation from dripping down the sides of the cup.

Standard Breakfast Smoothie

I’ve been snacking on trail mix (raisins, raw walnuts, pistachios and sunflower seeds) in the afternoon when I would usually be downing an iced coffee and bagel. This snack, too, has proved popular with the kiddos, and Adam, who for the longest time hated walnuts, has decided they are healthy and yummy. Who knew?

Trail Mix

Lunches and dinners have all been variations on a theme, the theme being avocado. Yesterday I made guacamole with diced tomatoes and it was delicious served with pepper strips for dipping. Or eaten directly off the spoon. Not that I would ever do that. Hee.

Hello Seoul!

kimberly May 14th, 2009

Here we are, living it up at the Renaissance Seoul Hotel. Well, not really living it up, because we’re all so incredibly exhausted that the only remotely appealing thing to do is flop onto the comfy king-sized bed and go to sleep. Except for Adam, who apparently now has caught a second wind.

It’s been an incredibly long day, that began when Todd’s brother Shaun picked us up to drive us to the airport at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, and kept right on going through mechanical issues that delayed our flight’s departure by nearly an hour, undergoing thermal scans before we could deplane in Tokyo (just in case we had the Swine Flu) and then rushing from one end of the terminal to the other to just make it in time for our connecting flight.

We were very fortunate to meet up with a lovely couple (Lee and Joe) who are also adopting a baby girl from Korea and it was rather reassuring to have someone else with whom to share anxieties about delays and flight connections.

Fully Caffeinated and Ready for Take-Off

Having been too nervous to eat breakfast this morning, my venti iced vanilla coffee helped me stay awake for most of the flight to Tokyo. But once the caffeine wore off, I had a brutal time staying awake. I think the lack of sleep over the past week finally caught up with me.

Adam also managed to get a decent amount of sleep on the plane, in between playing countless games of Sky Burger on the iPod, watching movies and reading.

A Little Cat Nap

Oh, and here is one of the guys who scanned us with a very cool thermal imaging camera to make sure we didn’t have Swine Flu. Pretty nifty, eh? We also had to complete fairly detailed health questionnaires before landing.

Swine Flu Scans

Thankfully the flight to Seoul was completely uneventful and we zipped right through the foreigners’ line at Immigration, located our baggage easily and cleared customs in record time, only to board a bus for the eighty-minute ride to the hotel.

Also both flights were able to provide veggie meals for Adam and me, so we didn’t have to rely solely on Lara bars.

And now, I really, really, really have to get to sleep, as it’s now almost 11 p.m. Thursday evening and we’re off to meet Leah tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. But now I think I might also be getting a second wind, which will not bode well for tomorow. Must think sleepy thoughts…

A Latte a Day

kimberly June 18th, 2008

Guess what? Apparently all the coffee I drink may actually be improving my health: Six cups of coffee a day may be good for you.

Or if not exactly improving my health, at least it’s not going to kill me any sooner. I’m off to get a latte — it’s the healthy thing to do.
